It’s time to cut back on turf watering during winter months. Irrigating twice a month would be the maximum and less if there is a good rain. Proper moisture management encourages plants to grow roots deeper into the soil, making them healthier and more drought-tolerant. Over watering can damage plant roots. The amount of water lost through transpiration (movement of water vapor through the plant to the atmosphere) is a function of the rate of plant growth. Transpiration is very low during the dormant season. Watering too much forces oxygen out of the soil and creates shorter roots. This is a great time to test your irrigation and have any problems fixed for summer use. A problem free irrigation system will save you money by watering your turf efficiently in the hot summer when it is needed.
We are currently providing deep root fertilization for young and struggling trees. Pre-emergent weed control will start the end of January.
